Now we will look briefly into how an Exchange Server really works.

There are four important components in Exchange server which works concurrently to handle all the process efficiently.

  • Information Storage / Data Storage: The Exchange Server database where all the communications data like mails, contacts, scheduling information will be saved, fetched and updated.
  • SMTP: The primary protocol which will be used for the main data transmissions between the servers and clients. Few receiver client may be outside the premises with or without Microsoft email provider.
  • System Attendant: SA is the core service of Exchange Server to monitor, manage and control many other exchange server services.
  • Active Directory: It is mainly used to store and share the directory information with windows. The AD driver is the core MS Exchange component that allows Exchange services to add, update, delete and search for Active Directory Domain Services (AD-DS) information.

Configure the Exchange Server and create the email accounts for each user to communicate via emails using the server. Each account must be configured with necessary permission levels. User can login to manage his data like emails, contacts, calendars etc. MS Exchange Server Administrator user can handle filtering options to secure the user data from viruses, spam and other emails which are basically irrelevant. IP Blocking, Incoming messages blocking are few other filters that administrator can set. Once the data is accepted by the exchange server, they will be routed to the intended recipient. Recipient user can view the mail using any of the email providers.
