Why Merge Office 365 Accounts?

Let’s have a look at some scenarios that could warrant merging of two Office 365 accounts:

Business and personal accounts: Say you have a business account setup with work email that you use to access Office 365 tools, SharePoint etc and you also have another account for personal use then you will have to merge Office 365 accounts if you ever wish to combine both these accounts.

Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A): If an organization acquires another organization then trying to merge Office 365 accounts would be the obvious way forward. For example, consider an organization ABC that has acquired a smaller organization XYZ and both have their own Office 365 tenants as illustrated:

Source tenant Target tenant
Domain abc.com xyz.com
Office 365 domain abc.onmicrosoft.com xyz.onmicrosoft.com

In this case, one must migrate all mailboxes from the source ‘xyz’ tenant to the parent ‘abc’ Office 365 tenant without interrupting mail flow.

How do I link two Office 365 accounts?

Whatever be the reason, if you wish to link two Office 365 accounts or merge Office 365 accounts, then one must be mindful of the fact that Office 365 doesn’t have native support for direct tenant-to-tenant migration. This leaves us with two options, first is to setup a Hybrid Exchange Server so that we can move all mailboxes from source tenant down to it and then migrate all the mailboxes from Exchange Server to target tenant.

The second and easier approach would be to copy mailboxes directly from source tenant to target tenant using a tool like EdbMails. Making use of EdbMails to merge Office 365 accounts can not only help you achieve your migration goals faster but also saves you from the headache of having to manually configure hybrid environments. EdbMails is also capable of mailbox migration within the same domain for scenarios where you to create a new mailbox for the same user.
